Display division of commercial printer finds high runnability in C1S stock and
Sees 10% Increases in Productivity

Most printers have a

favorite

paper that becomes the house stock of a certain
grade. This is the paper that can be relied on to be consistent and dependable.
Meyers Printing (Minneapolis, MN) has found its C1S house choice in Tango

 paper,
a C1S (coated one side) manufactured by Westvaco (Evadale, TX).

Success on Display
As an $80 million commercial printer with over 550 employees and three divisions,
Meyers Printing has high standards for its paper suppliers. By focusing on good,
consistent performance, the 50-year-old company has grown 20% annually for each of
the last seven years through its three printing divisions (display, label, and litho)
and one subsidiary.

The company's display division serves such blue-chip names as Kraft Foods, M&M Mars,
3M, Target, Nike, Pilsbury, Calvin Klein and Blockbuster. By delivering consistently
good printing to this profitable industry segment, Meyers has become an industry leader.
Matt Moffett, Meyers' director of quality, procurement, and technology explains,

We
saw that there was not a major player who owned the point-of-purchase market, so we
decided it was a good opportunity for us. We stepped up our capabilities to handle
the entire process - from design to turn- key manufacturing to distribution.

  Meyers
Printing's display division has a fleet of six presses, three of which are UV capable.
They range in size from 40 to 63 inches and are manufactured by Heidelberg, Komori,
and Man Roland.

The Search for the Right Substrate
As Meyers Printing started to work heavily on signage projects, the search began
for a high quality suitable substrate that was reliable on press. States Moffett,

We had worked with a range of substrates - from very expensive, high-end stocks to
really unreliable ones. With our clients, we need to know that there will be no
problems on press - we have tight deadlines to meet.

According to Moffett, Meyers was experiencing problems with several of the different
C1S sheets it was using. Blade streaks and slitter dust were consistent problems.
With repeat occurrences of hickeys forcing stoppages during a press run, the decision
was made to try yet another substrate.

We needed something of exceptional dependability, and also affordable. We finally
found that combination in Tango,

 says Moffett.

With other sheets, our press
operators were running back and forth during production picking hickeys. Now we
are very particular about what we run on the press and it has made a tremendous
difference in both increased productivity and decreased downtime,

 says Moffett.
He estimates that Meyers has seen a 10% increase in productivity since switching
to Tango.

Tango is a C1S sheet known for its dependable performance on press. With a brightness
of 88, it is not only a sturdy, durable substrate, but a bright white sheet that can
hold razor-sharp ink dots. Tango's double blade coating and special formulation
ensures a smooth coat that not only holds ink precisely, but also helps eliminate
a range of problems during printing and finishing. Other C1S coating formulations
have rougher surfaces that track dust and debris, creating hickeys and headaches.

Tim Kettler, sales manager at Xpedx (Minneapolis, MN), Meyers Printing's distributor,
originally suggested Tango to Moffett.

The reason we bring Tango to our customers
is its consistent runnability and high performance in terms of both print and bindery
performance.

Moffett also reports that Meyers has found tremendous time savings in the inventory
program it has worked out with Xpedx. The distributor always maintains a full stock
of the standard sizes that Meyers most often uses, so whatever size stock a job
necessitates is only a phone call away.

After becoming familiar with the sheet and its characteristics, Tango became Meyers
Printing Company's first choice. The company has been using Tango for almost two
years now.

Tango met our needs well - it is a great sheet and the price is right.
We made it the house sheet. Any projects that come in requiring C1S stock are
automatically run on Tango,

 says Moffett.

With Tango's high quality manufacturing, you know you can really depend on its
performance on press,

says Moffett. Realizing the importance of consistent
performance, Meyers Printing Company plans to continue rely on Tango C1S as the
house grade that has proven its worth on the plant floor.
